NTAG213 phone compatibility and usage guide

We use NTAG213 in our acrylic products. Learn how your phone reads the link, or use QR to reach the same page without NFC.

Recent iPhone

XS / XR and later: access through a notification with a correctly encoded link.

Android with NFC

Compatibility is expected through Type 2 / NDEF support; check the model and region.

No NFC?

Scan the QR code with your camera. Installing an app does not add NFC hardware to a phone.

THE KEY DIFFERENCE

Having NFC does not make every operation the same.

NTAG213 operates at 13.56 MHz and complies with ISO/IEC 14443 Type A and NFC Forum Type 2. It has 144 bytes of user memory, some of which is used by the record structure. It is suited to storing a short web link. NXP · NTAG213/215/216 datasheet ↗

Reading the tag

The phone's NFC reader retrieves the link from the tag. Phone hardware, the operating system and correct tag preparation all matter.

Opening the page

The link opens through a notification, browser or suitable app. Internet is needed to reach the website; actions such as posting a Google review follow that service's sign-in requirements.

Writing the tag

This saves the business link on the tag. It requires a writing app and a writable tag. Customers do not need to write to the tag to use a prepared stand.

These are not physical device test results. Compatibility is assessed from the NFC Type 2 standard, operating system documentation and manufacturer specifications. Faulty, locked or incorrectly encoded tags need separate checks.

DOCUMENTED EXAMPLES AND MODEL FAMILIES

This is not a list of every phone on the market. A missing model does not mean it is incompatible. Compare the exact model code in Settings → About phone with the manufacturer's specifications for the country of purchase.

APPLE

How do I scan with an iPhone?

XS / XR and newer models

  1. Wake the screen; after a restart, unlock the phone once first.
  2. Exit Camera and Wallet / Apple Pay, and turn off airplane mode.
  3. Hold the top of the phone near the stand's NFC area and keep it still briefly.
  4. Tap the notification. Unlock if prompted to continue to the link.

Background reading needs no separate reader app. The URL must be stored as a supported NDEF link record. Apple · Background NFC reading ↗ · Apple · XS, XS Max and XR support ↗

iPhone 7 / 8 / X

Core NFC, introduced with iPhone 7 and 7 Plus on iOS 11, allows tag reading within an app. On these older models, start scanning in a compatible NFC reader app. Check the app's required iOS version too. Apple · Core NFC and iPhone 7 ↗

Check the iPhone SE generation

The 2020 (2nd generation) and 2022 (3rd generation) SE specifications list NFC reader mode. Do not apply this result to the first-generation SE. Apple · iPhone SE (2nd generation) ↗ · Apple · iPhone SE (3rd generation) ↗

Programming: iOS 13 added Core NFC support for writing NDEF on iPhone 7 and later supported phones. A suitable writing app is required; tag write protection and capacity may limit the operation. Apple · NFC writing with iOS 13 ↗

ANDROID AND OTHER MOBILE SYSTEMS

Check NFC settings before the brand name.

Android documentation requires NFC-equipped devices to support NFC Forum Type 1–4 NDEF operations. As a Type 2 tag, NTAG213 is expected to work with correct NDEF records. This does not mean every Android phone has NFC hardware. Android · NDEF and Type 2 support ↗

Samsung Galaxy

Search Settings for “NFC”. Depending on the version, enable it under Connections → NFC and contactless payments. Hold the phone's rear NFC area near the stand. Samsung · Using NFC ↗

Google Pixel

Go to Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → NFC → Use NFC. Menu names can vary by system language and version. Google · Pixel NFC settings ↗

Other brands

For Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO, OPPO, HONOR, realme, vivo, OnePlus and Motorola, check the exact model's specifications. NFC on another model in the series is not enough. The table includes only examples with verified sources.

Unlock the screen, enable NFC and slowly try different positions on the back of the phone. Android normally scans tags while unlocked; how a link appears depends on default apps and the system version. Android · NFC tag reading flow ↗

Huawei / HarmonyOS: Verify NFC settings and reader support separately. Huawei recommends Settings → More connections → NFC and aligning the antennas. An Android compatibility rule does not prove that all HarmonyOS versions behave alike. Huawei · NFC reading and antenna position ↗

STEP-BY-STEP CHECKS

Tapped, but nothing opened?

No notification appears

First check your model's NFC reader support. Wake and unlock the screen, and enable NFC on Android. On iPhone 7 / 8 / X, start a scan inside an app. Try different heights and positions over the NFC mark. Test the same tag with another known-working phone to separate a phone issue from a product issue.

Can a case, card holder or metal surface interfere?

Remove payment or transit cards from the phone case and try again; other NFC cards may trigger unrelated notifications. Metal desks or accessories can reduce antenna performance. Compare results away from metal. Mounting on metal requires a suitable ferrite-backed tag and testing of the finished product; the NTAG213 chip name alone does not guarantee metal compatibility. Huawei · NFC notifications from other cards ↗ · NXP · Metal surfaces and antenna design ↗

A notification appears, but the wrong page opens

The phone may be reading the tag correctly; check the destination link. Test NFC and QR separately and compare addresses. Verify the link works when entered manually in a browser. If a redirect service is used, it must be online.

It works on one phone but not another

Compare model, regional variant, operating system and NFC settings. One device detecting a tag does not prove another will open its URL in the background. If a reader app sees the tag but no notification appears, check the record type and URL format.

NFC reads, but the Google review is not posted

The tag only shares a link. Internet access, the correct business link and the service's sign-in requirements are separate matters. The stand does not automatically post reviews, assign stars, follow profiles or send WhatsApp messages.

I use a phone without NFC, a tablet or a smartwatch

Try the QR code with your phone's camera. Do not assume tablets and watches behave like the phones in this table; NFC payments do not necessarily mean a general-purpose URL tag reader is available. This guide does not provide a verified list of tablets or watches.

FOR BUSINESSES

Correct preparation matters as much as the chip.

Preparing the link and tag

  • Write the web address as an NDEF URI / URL record, not plain text; prefer HTTPS.
  • Do not assume all 144 bytes are available for the URL. Check the actual record size in the writing app; use a short link controlled by the business if needed.
  • For business cards, share a digital profile link instead of trying to fit a large contact file on the chip.
  • Check that NFC and the printed QR code lead to the same correct business page.
  • Consider permanent locking only after final verification. A tag made permanently read-only cannot be rewritten.

Post-production checklist

This is a suggested test plan, not a record of completed product tests.

  1. Test the finished acrylic product on the intended table and at the intended angle.
  2. Scan with a recent iPhone and at least two different NFC-enabled Android models.
  3. Record each device's model code, system version and scan result.
  4. Test QR independently of NFC; confirm it does not link to the wrong location or account.
  5. Use a visible NFC mark and an instruction such as “No NFC? Scan the QR code”.

Changing the address on the tag differs from changing the destination page's content. Write locking may prevent the first. Our products use a dedicated permanent link. Update your details or destination in your dashboard; the NFC address and QR code stay the same. Tag write locking therefore does not prevent updates to dashboard information. How does the customer dashboard work?
